What is an IP address?
Every computer or device (router, modem, printer, etc) connected to a computer network and in particular when connected to the Internet is assigned a unique number. This number is used to identify your computer across the network. Computers communicate to each other across the Internet using their IP addresses. The IP address consists of a number separated by dots (e.g. 1.2.3.4). The IP address is assigned to your computer by your local ISP.
The abbreviation
IP stands for Internet Protocol - the protocol used for all communications across the internet. The IP address can also be thought like the phone number of your computer. As each telephone has a unique number, the same way your every computer, server or any other network device has a unique IP address.
