I have my client who hosted their website with easyspace and been hacked recently.

First their control panel, it is easy to use but not the cpanel i'm used to. They have their own control panel which i didn't like, and loads slowly most of the time.

They do not have online chating support, their knowledge base is poor. You hve to sumbit tickets.

I wont't recommend to anyone

I cannot begin to express how much you should avoid this company. They lie, they cheat and they steal your money.

My problems began 6 weeks ago. I am a professional web designer and my clients had an existing website hosted with Easyspace. They could not remember their details to allow me to log in and change their website so I contacted Easyspace on their behalf with proof of who I was and proof of who my clients were. I also included proof they were the legal owners of their domain for good measure.

Easyspace told us we didnt own anything and locked us out. Furthermore they told us that it was owned by the previous web designers (a company that had long since gone out of business).

After 5 weeks of threatening and rude phonecalls and emails we managed to get access but were forced to buy a new hosting package. It took easyspace over a week to give us access to this package and allow us to upload a website. This should have taken no more than 24 hours from the time we purchased the new hosting package.

Once access was granted we discovered they had failed to match the domain to the hosting package and the name on the whois records was completely wrong.

We decided we had had enough. We were still within our rights to cancel the service under the Distance Selling Regulations as 7 complete days had not elapsed. I contacted Easyspace and told them to cancel everything immediately and refund my money for the hosting. I told them why we were not happy and informed them I would be moving to a new host.

The customer service reps response was "well good luck getting any money out of us. We never refund idiots like you".

Furthermore, I have read in MANY other reviews that once they have your card details they will continue to charge you whether you have chosen auto renew or not. They will ignore requests to remove your card details from their systems and in their terms and conditions it states they have the right to charge you for services without notice and also the right to remove that service without notice or refund.

AVOID THIS COMPANY LIKE THE PLAGUE.

I found Easyspace much harder to use than other domains I have through 1&1.
Easyspace refused to refund my money although I cancelled before the 2nd year service started. It cost me about £65 in leaving fees and a renewal I didn't want, just to transfer out of Easyspace. Would not recommend.

1&1 continues to be much easier to use, and cheaper for the same thing. I have several sites with them.

The worst customer service I think I have ever encountered - and that includes pre- Perestroika Eastern Europe!Complete rip-off merchants who seem to relish the distress of clients who have been talked into buying inappropriate packages. They offer no opportunity to cancel a sevice and get a refund even if that service is yet to be implemented, and they force you to sign up and pay for 2 years at a time so that you're really stuck waiting for the agony to come to an end - and then they went and changed the renewal process to auto-renew, which you have to opt out of rahter than into. Result: they sneak in and renew the c**p package for ANOTHER 2 years a month early from a card that hadn't been authorised for auto-renew and won't refund. May not technically or legally be theft, but morally it certainly feels like it. Even when you try and cooperate to use their "services", they get it wrong - it takes weeks and many phone calls to implement any changes; even cancelling a service at the end of a payment period (I managed it once!) resulted in many lost emails and a lot of gnashing of teeth. AVOID THESE COWBOYS!!

AVOID THESE COWBOYS AT ALL COSTS.

Over the last couple of years these people have achieved a level of incompetence I have never come across with any other company.
After running a business we logged on to our website one day to find it had been hijacked by an american company, we were fully paid up so contacted wasteofspace, oops sorry easyspace who had to admit that yes we had paid up fully but an "error" between there admin and accounts had allowed our domain name to be put back up for grabs and therefore sold to someone else, bang business gone in one fowl swoop. They did nothing for us except offer us another name for free, Great help !! However through a complete lapse of thought on our part we recently signed up for an on line shop package with these jokers and they are still complete idiots, we paid by DD from our company mastercard started to build our site but every month there automatic payment system failed and they took our site offline, great if you have a online shop. It was left for us to contact them and they took the details and manually imputed them then we would get our shop back, this happened 4 times in 6 months so once again we have been robbed of 25 quid a month for absolutly nothing,we paid them for months and never got online once, they have outright lied in emails to us saying we had not left all the numbers when we filled out the online payment form but they managed to take the first 2 months money without issue. What kind of company sells web services but cannot get there own payment systems to work.
Now we have moved to a proper company 1&1.co.uk but easyspace want to charge us another 20 quid to transfer our name away from them.I have emailed them but as usual no reply.

IF YOU RUN AN ONLINE BUSINESS WITH A DOMAIN NAME REGISTERED WITH EASYSPACE ASK YOURSELF WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO YOUR BUSINESS IF YOU LOST YOUR NAME ???

I URGE YOU TO MOVE AWAY FROM EASYSPACE.

Due to the nature of our business we host using lots of providers on a range of packages. This includes over 100 providers around the world.

The packages we use range from simple cheap hosting through virtual servers up to dedicated and colocation.

We have previously avoided Easyspace as their reputation normally arrives ahead of them but I decided for the sake of £55 it may be worth giving them a spin. I was to regret it.

Having been warned about Easyspace the first thing we did was to email a pre-sales question asking if there we any issues or limitations with the VPS range they offered. This went unanswered so we called. After a long wait for an answer we were told 'you won't even know it's a virtual server'. We took this at face value.

We selected a custom Linux VPS running Ubuntu 8.10 Server with 512meg of ram allocated. This is normally very stable, flexible and well supported. As a comparison we set up an old IBM Thinkcentre with 512meg of RAM, a 2.8 pentium 4 and 8 gig of hard disc space. To be totally fair we also set up a similar 'virtual machine' with Sun's VirtualBox running on an Ubuntu 8.10 desktop.

Our first issue was to discover that Easyspace had not built the VPS with the correct amount of memory - 256meg was allocated and not the 512 we had paid for. We opened a support ticket which took 24 hours to resolve and the response was quite blunt "We have not finished building it yet"

Next, we decided we would install Postfix. It is *THE* MTA of choice and very stable. We have it running all over the world on a range of platforms and it's near impossible to screw it. Imagine my surprise when it would not start on the Easyspace VPS.

postfix/master[32504]: fatal: pipe: Cannot allocate memory

We noticed that bean counters suggested that there are not enough sockets allocated - in fact there were barely enough to keep the thing going with no software on it. We raised our second ticket in 24 hours requesting a fix. A day later the response:

"We've increased the numothersock parameter and postfix is now starting/running succesfully. Apologies for any inconvenience."

Which it was - almost. It was up, but if a message was passed in it would randomly crash. In the end We had to cut the default 100 instances down that were happily running on our VirtualBox and IBM Test Server (and in the rest of our real world hosts) to 10. This still gave it periods of crashing due to a lack of back end resources.

Postfix is a sensible and sane MTA. If set up correctly the ANVIL feature will deal with lots of abusive connections effectively. However good policy is to block connections from places like China at a firewall level. Ubuntu 8.10, much like any other Linux distro, has IPTables built in and it's easy to add rules to block out whole ranges so they can't even SYN up to the server. I can't remember ever having a Linux server without IPTables (or IPChains). Imagine my surprise when the Easyspace server would not accept basic IPTables rules.

Lots of BS followed from Easyspace but it was clear they were going to struggle to fix this. They way they virtualise things breaks IPTables and all you will get if you ask for a fix is a very long wait and lots of B/S. At this stage we asked for a refund. As I write this note I can hear Diana Ross "I'm still waiting" playing. How very apt.

Conversation with support dropped off to no response to the point where I lost my rag with them and left some abuse in a ticket. It seemed like nobody was reading them anyway. At this point the Support Manager told me they were terminating my service without a refund as they did not like the way I had spoken to them. Fantastic experience. This ticket had run for a month with little or no response from Easyspace and no resolution. Most people would get a little frustrated at this point, but I should not have used bad language, it was poor - but the service and product were just appalling.

The logs show a plethora of memory and resource issues that I have not been able to mimic in the real world. To make sure I was not being unfair I performed three final tests over the weekend the gave me to 'recover my files'. I directed the traffic off of a cluster of Barracuda Spam Firewall 600's handling about 3 million messages a day to see how long it would take to crash the various servers. The results;

Easyspace VPS 42 seconds
VirualBox Completed 1 hour without issue
IBM Test Hardware Completed 1 hour without issue

I dread to think what would have happened with the Easyspace VPS had I hosted a website on it as well as a mail server. Jesus, it does not bear thinking about.

In summary awful product, awful service, awful support. The worst experience I have had in hosting in 15 years.

As an end note this case is being pursued by us via Trading Standards and The Scottish Court Service. I expect this to take many months and cost over £2000 to get that £55 back from Easyspace. Fortuantely we are able to do this. But if you are a consumer and have an issue bear in mind they are in Scotland under Scottish jurisdiction. The plus side is the Scottish Laws are very good at protecting the buyer - we've used them many times. They are happy to toss out 'unfair terms of contract' that bad vendors try to cite to get out of providing a poor service. The square to this circle is you will need to travel to Scotland for the hearing. Being half Scottish I'm always glad to do this for the taste of a nice cold meat sandwich, but if you are not, stick with a host in England unless you are happy to throw good money away.

There isn't enough space to recount all the problems I have had with Easyspace. Raising a ticket on their support system is a waste of time - they will reply in a few days with some canned text message which shows they don't read your message. You can get a support line number if you really bother the salespeople (it is 0870 7555066). The support staff there accuse you of not understanding anything and never say it is their fault unless you can demonstrate the fault to them online. They never apologise. I had a domain that I had had for a few years and wanted to install a Wordpress site on it. I installed it - it didn't work, they told me it was my fault three times, eventually they admitted that this 'legacy' server didn't recognised index.php as a home page and eventually changed this manually. Wordpress then did work but very slowly with a 30 second pause between each online change. I phoned again, they said this was due to a bandwidth problem with the old server but to transfer to a new faster server I would have to pay a further £87 - I did this because it was a .com domain and a previous attempt to transfer a .com domian from Easyspace resulted it in being left in 'limbo' between Easyspace and a new hosting company for 9 months (it still is) with Easyspace saying it had been transfered and the new hosting company saying it hadn't. I tried to upload my site on to the new server but found it was an NT server rather than the Unix I had requested and so I couldn't change the files permissions I needed and so it goes on.....

I use Complia for all the sites I have been able to transfer and they provide a 5 star quality service for less money with a brilliant support service

Easyspace web hosting provider response:

Hi Simon,

I was sorry to read of the problems you've experienced whilst using Easyspace, it's certainly not the kind of service we would expect to provide.

Looking briefly through your account details it would seem as though the problems you had were compensated by a free upgrade to our (then) Platinum service on one of your domains, and a move to our Gold service on another of your domains.

The support contact details are freely available in your control panel, this includes LiveChat which is manned approximately 18 hours per day which gives instant access to a support engineer. Helpdesk access which allows you to log requests at any time of the day - our current average turnaround is approximately 10 hours (to which we only have one request logged by yourself).

Also our Support telephone line is available from Monday-Friday 9am-5:30 GMT. 08707555066.

Transfer of a .com domain is initiated by Easyspace by unlocking your domain name ready for transfer - this was done when you requested it. The next stage of the transfer process is for your new registrar to request transfer of the domain which goes to the admin contact of your domain. This was not completed which is why your domain was not transferred out.

If your still having problems please feel free to contact me directly I would be happy to help you with any problems your still encountering.

Kind Regards,
