I currently use DreamHost to host two sites with one of them being registered there as well. The larger of the two sites has been there since 1999, serves approx. 4,000 pages per day (not counting the faviocon, robots, and the like) and has an announcement list of approx. 1,000 users who subscribed using a (DreamHost provided) automated system. I have also used DreamHost in the past to host a site for a blogger-run-blog when I had the time to post.

The web hosting aspect is easy to use with standard ftp or secure-ftp access. The management of the various other things (changing billing options, checking user statistics, web-mail, forwarding/redirecting e-mail, and setting up e-mail subscription lists) is very user friendly. The team running it always has a sense of humor in their blog and newsletter -- but doesn't let that get in the way of getting the job done.

I have contacted them over a dozen times in the past with questions on topics such as transferring domains and the use of mailing lists and have gotten helpful responses within 24 hours to each one, often much quicker. (They also have a support wiki that answers a lot of standard questions).

I had a recent (my fault, I left a door open type) of security breach and they responded to my e-mail that day and followed up again the next.

The most negative publicity they have received is that recently they had a billing error where customers who were using automatic billing on their credit or debit cards were billed in advance. They caught the error, put a notice up about it on the status page, set about reversing the charges (e-mailing each person when their charges were reversed), and explained the entire situation on their blog.

They were good for a while and luckily for us they began tanking some of their email features right as our 2 year deal was ending. I will be moving elsewhere.

cons: e-mail downtime and no free anonymous ftp support. (they just recently added PAID anon. FTP)

A friend and colleague of mine convinced our small firm to begin using Dreamhost for our website hosting. Before that, we'd been using a local contractor who handles our network administration, so we had a little trepidation about using a company all the way in Los Angeles. But so far, we've been really very happy. We don't mind only using email for most of our support questions, the inside control panel is very user-friendly for newbies, but there's a lot of wiggle room to improve a site and do more powerful things, once you begin learning more about back-end programming. We've had very little down-time so far, and think the blog and monthly newsletter are actually funny, as well as informative.
We were also very happy with the discounted rate we were able to get (my colleague gave us the affliate code "HOUSTONSPACE" - apparently users can refer people and give them around $100 off their service fees, in return for free hosting), so our first year of hosting was incredibly cheap. I think depending on the service, if you use one of those codes, you can get it down to around 20 bucks for the first year.

Dreamhost, offers more than what it can deliver. My site has 100 visitors per day and I had to contact support weekly as the site was going down for various reasons "Some other site was overloading the server" this is a regular excuse . No uptime garantee , I thought it is not important but my site was down almost weekly..
If you are looking for a stable hosting dont come here..

After 5 months of suffering I decided I take my site elsewhere..

I switched over to DreamHost from NoMonthlyFees and have never looked back. I've yet to see better pricing. The DreamHost staff is competent and friendly. The custom control panel is superlative, and they offer more features than you can shake a stick at! Using DreamHost makes a managed web hosting plan not only attractive but enjoyable. If you're looking for a host and don't need dedicated hosting, look no further than DreamHost!

I've been with DH for nearly 9 years with various plans, they were definitely one of best hosting company out there back then. I appreciate their constant upgrades and updates, but the past few years they have been plagued by many downtimes. I truly hope they get back on track in their reliability, but as of now I am quite tempted to switch.

Best service that I've seen yet

I switched from a host that was constantly getting hacked and making server upgrades without notifying me or other customers. Dreamhost is great for the single reason that they almost always give prior warning before doing any updates or upgrades to servers. Plus, their customer support is usually very quick. In most cases I get a response within 45 minutes. My old host would take days sometimes. I believe I still have some open support tickets with my old host, which is sad, since I closed my account a few months ago.

Overall Dreamhost is amazing. Good prices, quick and intelligent support, and a good amount of control over the servers I am hosting on. I give them a 10 all around. I've seen a little bit of downtime here and there, but I've always have fair warning.

Downward spiral

Dreamhost was great until early summer 2006. Then the problems started for real. Power outages in their data center revealed the fragility of their network. Sites were down for hours or days. Mail was slow or unreliable.

Fast forward to February 2007. A PLANNED power outage in the same building led to hours more downtime than expected. Dreamhost posted an announcement on their blog but did not mail customers.

Reliability -- the most important factor in choosing a web host (after price, for most people) -- has suffered greatly in the past year. I cannot recommend Dreamhost as of early 2007.
