What a terrible, terrible company. Apart from the fact that their servers and support suck they are also hopelessly disorganized and incapable. Months ago I ordered some services with them. They said they couldn't charge my credit card - which is used for 20-30 online transactons each month elsewhere without a single problem - and advised me to pay via Paypal which I did. I sent them all of Paypal's transaction details - not only once but about 10 times since they kept sending reminders about "non-payment". Now, after 4 months they have suddenly charged my credit card for the same amount, saying that they never received my Paypal pament which is of course nonsense - I have all proof that it was paid. And their billing support doesn't even bother to reply anymore.
STAY AWAY - under all circumstances. Hostway means trouble on all levels!

I've been using Hostway for 10 years along with 2 or 3 other hosting companies. Hostway has by far the worst technical support that I've experienced.
With their Gold Plan you get a toll free tech support phone number. This sounds pretty good until you call them and realize their tech department is located in Bulgaria and they seem to no ability to figure out what is wrong with your server located in Chicago.
When your site goes down, in America, they might tell you that it is working fine in Bulgaria. My site was down for over a week before I was forced to rebuild it on a new server with a different company.
Thank you Hostway for being so crappy that you finally forced me to go to the trouble of finding a real hosting company! I wish I'd done it 10 years ago.

They Make It Difficult To Leave

We moved to GoDaddy because the support, price and dashboard feature are so much better than what Hostway offers. We weren't unhappy with Hostway, until we tried to move.
Our account moved from Valueweb to Hostway a number of years ago, to our surprise. But, the service worked, so we stayed.
Once we decided to move, we learned that our domain name was registered with someone we didn't know, Domain People. Trying to track down these folk ended up with multiple phone calls to a Vancouver, B.C. telno, which I ultimately discovered were be routed to BULGARIA, where the phone was being answered!!
When they insisted it would take 5 to 7 days to move the domain to GoDaddy as registrar, I got REAL nervous, and real serious. More phone calls finally got me in touch with a young man in Bulgaria who listened, and talked with someone higher up, and within an hour our domain was back in the U.S.A.
Domain People did what was right, our service was at GoDaddy and that would have been the end of the story, except....
A month after settling with Hostway and receiving an acknowledgement that our account was cancelled, Hostway began trying to collect for another months service claiming that the account was never cancelled, insisting they never sent the e-mail I received from them.
We had no complaint about Hostway for years, but, we never had any need to have contact with them.
My advice is FIRST find out where you domain is if you are with Hostway.
Second, compare GoDaddy prices to what you're paying to Hostway, we prepaid a multi-year service contract with GoDaddy for what we were paying Hostway for a single year, and the people at GoDaddy are a lot nicer.

Bad Service Stay Away

I was with Valueweb for several years with really no problems. I get a email last Thursday that Hostway bought my account from Valueweb and ALL WENT DOWNHILL. First off you get Bulgaria when you call for help. After dealing with someone that couldn't understand what I was saying I finally got a person in Canada. After several hours on hold and so on I was told sorry, there is nothing we can do. My site was working before Hostway took over so why not now? And why can't they fix it? They kept telling me it was my problem, well me and my problem are moving to another company wonder how they will feel about that.

Like a few other reviews here, I have been with Hostway for many years and was entirely happy with their service, until just a few weeks ago. They shut down my E-commerce store without warning, accused me of using up too much of their server resource even though I had done nothing new to the site for years. Eventually it turned out that the technical problems were due to their trying to move my site to a new server, but they tried to make out it was me that abused their service. Tried and pleaded as I might I could not get them to resolve problems, all I got were emails about how they were passing the buck between their tech staff.
Nigh on 10 years as a loyal customer and they treated me like dirt for some problems that they themselves induced. Be warned!

I started out with this company maybe ten years ago and had nothing but good things to say about them. About 2 years prior to this writing something happened at the company. Their technical support now appears to be staffed by idiots. My PHP and MySQL content management system based site went down in 2008 and was not brought back to a working state for *4 weeks*!! That is ridiculous in todays Internet world. I should have made the move then but I had a history with the company so I stuck with it.
After some more recent problems with technical support I decided enough

I was a customer of ValueWeb for many years which was purchased by Hostway.
I started receiving nastygrams about charges to renew my account even though I was prepaid for a date two months further in future. Then, when the ValueWeb control panel was changed to Hostway, there was a severe degradation of service, the response time was horrible.
Even though I set my account settings to not renew and Hostway billing acknowledged that setting, they continued to send me nastygrams about being past due on my account even though my account was prepaid.
I have sent many, many emails to their billing department to cancel my service yet they still billed my credit card even though they were explicitly told they were not authorized. I have put in a refuse to pay with the credit card company and filed a complaint of fraud with my state's attorney general office.
This is one horrible company.

After we have removed our website from them to another company, they surprised us with an email on Thursday APRIL 9th that our domain will expire Friday APRIL 10th. So, I called them on Friday AFTER HOURS (24/7) and tried to transfer the domain name somewhere else. To my surprise that the domain went on HOLD and they person in charge can not do anything about it. I HAVE TO CALL BACK ON MONDAY TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. The only way to resolve it is to renew the domain name for ONE MORE YEAR THROUGH THEM......
ARE THESE PEOPLE PENALIZING US BECAUSE WE HAVE MOVED OUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE?!! AND WHAT WHITH THIS RIP-OFF OF $35.00 TO RENEW A FREEKIN’ DOMAIN NAME.... FOR ONE YEAR.... THIS IS POPOSTROUS.

No customer service at all...

If you call on the weekend or don't have an hour to wait on hold. This company TOTALLY SUCKS. I was trying to get a simple DNS change, but since I called after 5 on a Friday, they said it wouldn't be done until Monday at the earliest. I called the "domain service center" on Monday, and it's been ten minutes now and I'm still on hold.
They bought ValueWeb and quickly turned it into "lack of value"-web.
Whatever you do, don't use Hostway/ValueWeb.
Just warning you.

One more example. I had a question about my bill so I used their system, provided on their web site, after logging in and they sent a response telling me they could not supply any information until I provided the last 4 digits of my credit card or the last four characters of my password. Why didn't they ask for that on their support ticket form? I never got an answer because I just didn't go any further.
After some more recent problems with technical support I decided enough was enough and started looking elsewhere.
