the WORST webhosting

I was their customer for almost a year and I decided to cancel my account due to some reasons:
1. I found a cheaper web hosting
2. 1and1 customer service sucks. They keep you on hold for at least 30 minutes
3. They do not know how to handle customers.

Before transferring to my new web hosting, I cancelled my account about 3 weeks from my next billing cycle. I called their customer support and verified everything that if I cancel now, should I still be able to access my remaining weeks of my account until it expires. And the person said "yes".

But after confirming my cancellation, I wasn't able to access my account and the technical department told me that once you acknowlege your cancellation, your account is still active but I your account is locked. This means that you cannot access your files anymore.

I don't know what's their problem why they need to lock your account. You already have paid for it and there will be no harm if you cancel the account prior to renewal.

So, my advice is, before you cancel your account with 1and1, you have to make sure that you have deleted or backed up all your files prior to cancelling your account with them.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND 1AND1 TO ANYBODY.

Don't use 1and1 hosting!

1And1 has lost us as a customer!
We suffered our second major outage this year and our site has been down a total of more than 60 hours in both January and February. It is obvious that 1and1 cannot adequately support their systems and customers. The 99.99% guaranteed uptime promise is an absolute lie.
I have had horrible experience with technical support. Waiting on phone hold for 30+ minutes, getting comical feedback from people who have no idea what to do except send an "email to the Admin dept", and pitiful slow response to the resolution of our problems. These are completely unacceptable business practices.
Advice: Pay a little more money and get a reliable service if your business Web presence is important to you at all. Our experience has cost us $$$ in lost business revenue.

Serious Downtime

On several occasions this company broke my web hosting by doing stupid things like:

Setting file permissions on the server incorrectly so users couldn't view public pages without a username / password.

Switching out software I depend on with no warning, for example changing .NET 1.1 to 2.0 which again broke by website. Actually, they have done this one repeatedly, each time with no notice.

It would be one thing if I did something to break my site and had some downtime. That I could live with. But these guys broke my site and each time it took several days to bring it back up, even though the fix was trivial such as changing file permissions back, or changing configuration back to enable the site to function.

Support is polite, but ignorant and unable to give real information about issues and how to help. It takes many calls to get a problem resolved.

This is clearly a web hosting company that spends its money on advertising.

I strongly discourage anyone from using these guys unless they have basic static HTML pages ... nothing serious like dynamic pages, or databases. Also, be prepared for some serious downtime.

RUINS YOUR BUSINESS!

A complete disaster from day 1. Just to name a few of the problems:

1. A failed domain transfer happened - the control panel features disappeared for the site. Customer support recommended deleting and re-adding domain - resulted in removal of ALL email accounts. Took almost a full day to restore manually.

2. After 3 months downtime started (December). We had stable traffic of 1400 unique visitors per day. The server went down for 2 full days. Have still not recovered from this fully after 2.5 months.

3. One full day of downtime in mid-Jan.

4. One full day of downtime in mid-Feb.

Then another full day of downtime end-Feb. Apparently they have moved our website to Germany and assigned a new IP. As a result of this all our web stats disappeared from the system.

5. Customer support cannot do anything. No support personell has actually done anything live at any time. They can only report to other people and check status.

All this downtime means (since we are a webbased business): Our company is down and non-functional and has frustrated employees 1-2 days per month. They have ruined our web ranks, traffic and caused considerable damage to our business.

We routinely get complaints from customers who cannot access their licenses and download software. The total business cost for us would be in the range of 2000-3000 dollars so far.

The only thing they have going for them is: if you email complaints@1and1.com they will give you 3 months free for each instance. We have 6-9 months of free service at this point. I don't even get bills anymore.

Avoid 1&1

In a nutshell - they are the worst company I have ever dealt with. They have the worst customer service and support I have ever known. They have no interest in dialogue with thier customers when things go wrong... and woe betide those who get caught in thier auto renewal process even when you thought you had cancelled. I would search the web before using 1&1 and then make your own decision. My advice is avoid them at all costs but don't just take my word for it...do your own research.

1and1 and Disgruntled

1and1 Internet took 173 of my domains off the Internet at their sole discretion. I filed several reports and I am getting results.
The links to file a complaint can be found at my Cottage North website.The Better Business Bureau is a credible organization. They rate 1and1 Internet as unsatisfactory. I am asking The Attorney General of Pennsylvania to scrutenize their contract, they claim you waived your rights to trial by jury, to class actions, to almost everything including your clams(like oysters ) 2.1.7 for $5.95cents.

present a lot of very good links to better expose what 1and1 Internet is all about. If you are adament about using 1and1 do yourself a favour and read the 15 page T&C, so you will know what you are bargainning for and what you are waiving. You may even decide to wave 1and 1 good bye !

Ok support, Great value

I've had their inexpensive Home Linux package for about 2 years now. I've seen a good number of negative user reviews on 1and1, but I cannot relate to their complaints.

tech support: Their English isn't the best, but they generally know what they are talking about.

My website was recently hacked (do to my own lack of PHP knowledge). I knew that my 1and1 package was advertised as having a daily backup, but I was skeptical. I called their tech support, and within a day I had a 48-hour-old backup restored to my FTP account.

1and1 has great package features and pricing. At very rare times their mail servers have issues, but 99.9% of the time everything's great with them. FTP and web downloads from my site are very fast (I'm using a cable modem at 10mbps download speed). I would definately reccomend them.

i don't believe the technical staff overseas have any idea what even the topic of conversation is about- could be computers, cows, anything. the answers are straight from a notecard. their spam filters "filter" their own emails so if they have a billing problem, you won't know about it. apparently they see emails from "1and1" as spam- which they are. this place is crooked.

Not reliable

In the few months that I have had this site up, they have lost their server twice for extended periods that I know about. The first time I was told it would be 24 hours but was over 36 hours. My site is currently down and they say the server will be back up sometime today. I am totally disgusted!!!
