Currently being investigated by the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office after complaints, as well as the Better Business Bureau where they have an "Unsatisfactory" record. Personally, they sold a domain name to us after we'd paid for it for a year, and then overcharged us. We are pursuing legally, and as an investigative journalist, have had lots of interest and coverage already.

1and1 Cheap - And for Good reason - NO SUPPORT

This is a warning to anyone considering using 1and1 for dedicated server hosting.
We signed up for two servers with 1and1 , and we were working on the assumption that 1and1 support is almost non existant (Which is very true).
We are Microsoft Gold Partners , and have extensive OS and hardware experience.
I signed up on the basis we would not need 1and1 support for anything other than a physical hardware fault.
When we had a physical hardware fault it took 1and1 3 days ! to replace a stick of memory.
When the server came back the OS had somehow been corrupted.
The 1and1 windows recovery system didnt work (1and1 suggested we use a linux emergency recovery) , but as we have no linux experience this was about as much use as a chocolate teapot.
The Serial console access , also didn't allow us to press f8 for DS restore mode or safe mode (from which we could have recovered the OS).
(essentially rendering the serial console access useless).
So all the "safety features" 1and1 offered didnt work correctly , essentially leaving us with one option and that was to do a clean install of the OS , (Which fortunately does work from 1and1 control panel).
we now have a day or so's work to recover the server just because the 1and1 service is so bad. so all in all 3 days + downtime for our customers.
My complaint to 1and1 customer support was never answered (2 months+)
There is no online ticket system to track issues.
If you leave an issue with 1and1 support they will not resolve the problem.
If you call regularily to get problems resolved you might as well be speaking with a monkey , as you would get a similar response.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS , YES THEY ARE CHEAP BUT you will pay for it in customer dissatisfaction (Unless this server is going to be used for something completely non critical - ie you can wait up to 1 week for it to be fixed , and you have the time to rebuild the server whenever there is an OS issue.
(I did research before signing up , and thought that due to our technical skills and experience we could ignore the support issues with 1and1 but this was not the case as there are times when hands on server access is needed (especially when most of the 1and1 tools offered for server recovery do not work).
You have been warned.

This company is trouble

I agree with the previous revocation. If 1and1 could not withdraw money - you find out about it too late. Revert site will be very difficult. I have not been able to pay for hosting the second time. The first payment is passed, but after 6 months - no. The account is blocked, there is no clear answer. Here is a recent letter, which came 10 days ago, after no reply:

Not sure what all those complaints are about. After going through a bunch of bad web hosters (GoDaddy, TekTonic, DailyRazor, Magicalworks) this is definitely a company to stick with.

Not Ready for Business

Don't use them for Moodle if you value your time or money. I tried for a 5 hour period to get help with the backup of a course. A bunch of ducks and gatekeepers with no interest in helping and no knowledge of the application made my life miserable. It was a server 500 error and the explainations I got ranged all over the place. I was told that supervisors were too busy to talk with me and that I could not talk directly to the technical staff that they agreed I needed to fix the problem. By the way I've been waiting for six hours for them to provide me a backup of my four courses because they thing that I as the administrator of the site should not have that ability. Two weeks ago I could do it. But then they don't know the difference between an SQL system backup and a Moodle course backup. And they didn't want to learn.

As if the other reviews on the site state that 1and1 does indeed suck, here is my review. They still do. Signed up with them in July 2007, canceled in early September due to the downtime of my site. They fought with me over the 90 day money back guarantee. Got $4.51 back after paying $29.99. What happened to the other 25 or so bucks? No response after 18 days and many emails to billing department. Waited an hour on hold to billing department, no response. Finally got back to me, said they credited me the rest of the money. Two weeks later, still wont respond and no money has been credited. This company is full of false hopes and is a bunch of liars and crooks. DO NOT GO WITH THIS COMPANY, you will regret it.

If you want to make the BIGGEST mistake of your life, sign up to 1and1. DO NOT GO NEAR 1AND1. This has to be the worst company on the planet. Their products and services sound too good to be true - because that are too good to be true.
This company is built of robbing clients. Poor server uptime, non-existant support. If you call their "24 hour" support, you will be put through to a call centre in the Phillipines where a computer illeterate poorly trained individual will read you answers off their FAQ. If you ask a question that is too hard for them, they will hang up on you, or re-read an irrelevant answer off their FAQ.
They will charge your credit card imaginary amounts and it takes hours on the phone to have these false charges removed.
If you then try to transfer away from them, they will hold your domains hostage, and make it impossible.
1and1 are COMPLETELY useless. Useless customer support, useless billing department, unethical games and tricks to charge you more again and again.
If there is one decision I could ever go back and change, it would be to go back to the day I signed up with 1and1, and simply jump off a clif instead. That would have been less painful in hindsight.

I have only had them for 1 1/2 months and I have had nothing but problems with them. The reps have no clue about computers or web themselves and they can hardly even speak English! I have been experiencing FTP issues where it will work and then just disconnect after a short time (20 mins or so) and then it will not let me reconnect for hours! If I can't FTP, I can't build me webpage. Then when they setup my clik n build app they set it up with THEIR admin privileges and I couldn't change ANY permissions. When I called them they said that it was a known problem (the permissions) and that their (lowsy) technicians were working on it. I told them to reverse the install. I installed the same (Joomla) application myself and everything (permissions) worked fine. I called to tell them the solution and they didnt want to hear it. They kept asking me if I had a PROBLEM?? What the heck?! You don't want to be embarassed by a regular joe who knows more about your darned product than you do?! These guys are the worst! I can't believe this! I have gotten twice the amount of support from Joomla than from 1and1 and I'm not even paying Joomla!

For the price I paid (which I got on sale), the service wasn't too bad. Nice layouts but their navigation and control panel system is cumbersome and somewhat slow. I wish they had a more intuitive layout. Uptime has been okay, I've experienced some downtime, a little more than my host prior to 1&1. Technical support answered my emails usually within a day, or a few minutes. I don't have anything bad to say, but at the same time I'm not impressed enough to stick with them. Their control panel is too beefy and slow for my taste. I think if 1&1 cut through the clutter it would be less of a drag.

Service? What service?

I was originally drawn to this firm by their recommendation from a respected friend. Since setting up an account, I experienced a series of problems that Technical Support could not resolve;
- Loosing Email
I subscribe to various email lists and archive the content, posting it for others as reference material. The EmailListServer immediately flags account errors to the list admin. No errors occurred but my inbound emails just stopped arriving. I opened a complaint on 20070605 with Tech Support and furnished everything they needed to isolate the problem. They said they would escalate the issue to the âAdminsâ and they would be in touch.
- No response to open Technical Support requests
After 30 days with no follow-up from the âAdminsâ, I contacted Technical Support, worked through their outsourced Level 1 support staff. I find out Technical Support cannot even contact the âAdminsâ because âTech Support is in the Philippines and Admins are in Virginia or Germany, Iâm not really sure.â The Tech Support supervisor arranged a billing deferral while the issue was resolved.
- Internal policies not followed
30 days more transpired (still no contact from Tech Support or the Admins) and I received a Billing notice that the account will be suspended for non-payment. What the heck, I have a billing deferral! I write to complaints@1and1.com to inform them of the situation. I got a response from Technical Support asking to tell them about the problem I opened the ticket for in the first place. Huh, you lost the open ticket and all the related documentation that lead to the billing deferral? I responded that they already had the required data and they acknowledged the problem existed. All of a sudden, the responses halted, leading to,
- Account Suspension
With no activity on the tech issues, I finally cave in and figure I'll just switch to another hosting service when the committed-to one year contract expires. I enter my revised billing info and find the account is now locked out.
I am sure this saga will continue but you are smart enough to learn from my mistakes. If you are even thinking about 1 & 1 hosting, just go elsewhere.
