I decided to let my web site expire. I thought by not paying the fee they would cancel my site and we'd all be happy. Not so, cancelling service with 1 and 1 was convoluted at best -- downright difficult. I was fairly pleased with 1 and 1, but the cancellation ordeal left me quite bitter. They charged me even though the site was taken down. Good luck talking to a person about business issues. I will not use 1 and 1 again.

1and1 is the worst hosting service I have ever had the displeasure to work with. We have several hosting accounts across the Internet primarily due to the fact that 1and1 can't seem to keep their servers up. Over the last year they have been down for more than a week three separate times. We asked for a credit which amounted to a few dollars but never saw it. We joined their affiliate program three years ago and, regretfully, referred a number of people to their service but never saw a penny from their affiliate program. Needless to say we don't recommend anyone anymore.
We have attempted to cancel domains to no avail as their system is designed to be so full of required processes that the cancellation never gets completed and as such you end up being charged for a domain you thought was canceled.
If your looking for an affordable hosting service you would be far better off paying a couple extra dollars and be sure the company you choose has a good customer service department located in the US or Canada. 1and1 has their customer service in India and their personnel haven't got a clue except how to say "We apologize for that but..."

I would really like to see this company go under. And I think it will happen soon enough. They way they treat their customers is disgraceful. I cancelled one domain which should have been parked, was billed for full domain, then I cancelled, and they billed me again, and sent it out for collection. Not a friendly business. I will move my other website elsewhere.

Let's start with positive things. Prices are good and our websites are up and running MOST of the time, pretty close to 90% I should say.
But technical support and service is a crash and burn process with 1and1... Too bad that we can never talk to those "mysterious admins" tweaking and modding and coding on live web servers... And the army of idiots standing in their calling centers (located in the Philippines) are paid exclusively to get their ass kicked and reply "thanks for calling us and for choosing 1and1 internet"...
So many morons at the same time at the same spot is pretty much a Guinness record breaking ! They don't even know what they're talking about at the very first place and on top, from one to the other, they just keeping contradicting themselves.. (??)
Conclusion : for business just go away. Don't (never ever) deal with their technical support. It's pure waste of time. You're on your own ! But once you know their admin interface, it's pretty versatile with nice (unique) features...
But technical support... Wow... Stop feeding them !! lol

Bad Customer Service

I had a DNS problem and I'm on my 3rd full day of no solution. The support department knows noting and is very difficult to work with. My site has been down for 3 days and I have no idea how long it will be until I'm back online.
I did not decide to host with 1and1. I will never host with them again. Caveat emptor. Stay away from the World's #1 Host. They truly suck.

1and1 offered a limited 'free' hosting service with stiff limitations, much like Geocities (back in the day). My 'site' was tiny and was hit maybe twice a week at the most. One day a few months ago, I noticed my site was down. The FTP access didn't work. They'd cancelled all free plans without notice and dumped all the sites. Thanks 1and1, but after reading more absolutely horrible reviews and accounts of your terrible (or nonexistent) customer service, you can GET BENT - I wouldn't have paid for your service in any case, but now you've got yet another bad review to add to your already huge collection. The very least you could have done was WARNED me that your free service was being discontinued, but evidently it was enough just to shut down all the accounts and flush the sites wholesale. In any case, 1and1 hosting is TERRIBLE because when they screw up, they REALLY, REALLY screw up and you're left holding the bag. Read some reviews here and elsewhere. Being BIG seems to be 1and1's only advertising gimmick, and you'll realize how big they are when you want to know why your site's been down for 36 hours straight and you get nothing by way of information or estimated time 'til it's up except, "We're working on it". 1and1 Hosting is too big for their breeches and I say LET 'EM DIE.

They have the worst customer service. I had a billing issue that they were completely inflexible about. They did not even try to contact me about a balance due after I cancelled my account. They just sent me to collections. Completely unfair.

These guys decided to take my domain name while it was not even expired, and make use of the reasonably high google rating for their own SEDO parking company. I can buy my domain back for 3500 euros, but, since they took the domain, my business is nearly dead. These guys steal domain names, then offer a long bureaucratic process involving faxes and fees to extort more money from you.
Avoid like the plague.

I have been with 1and1 for 4 yrs. Mine has Windows Hosting's business package which costs $9.99/month. It gives 3 domain names and unlimited subdomains. It has a lot of features such as web builder, email marketing tool, etc... The price is about right. However, it currently supports .NET 2.0 while other already support NET 3.5 and Silverlight. I am currently writting applications using Visual Studio 2008. With .NET 2.0 support only, I cannot utilize all new features in my code. Therefore, I think of moving to a different web hoster.

You'ld be silly to think that any web bosting company would be perfect for everybody...
1&1 has given me a lot of features and free stuff over the last couple years. I think their cheap prices are a bit crazy, but het I guess it means their competitors have to try and offer more for less. Big players like 1&1 in the indusry help everyone get better deals, no matter who they choose as a webhost.
If you are the kind of person to use fake signup information or who does not keep their credit card up to date, or who expects a dedicated support person for your $4.99 or $19.99 mo. - you might have expectations or personal behaviors that would cause you to have problems with any host.
No boubt there are webmasters who probably know more than most 1st level support guys at the hosting companies.
If you want full access and customization from a deep discounter like 1&1 - it begs the question, "WHY?" Are you someone who runs full blown ecommerce in ashared hosting environment just to save a little money? Godd luck to you if you are.
I remain for the past years, a satisfied 1and1 client. They work out just fine for all my needs. You should judge for yourself since most of the millions of happy 1and1 clients probably don't have time to counter the rants of negative comments like show up on this site.
