Shocking Customer Service

I have been with 1and1 for some years now. Cant fault there service technically however customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Twice I have received letters from an external debt collection agency working on 1and1's behalf, for domains that I have previously candled.
For reasons only known to 1and1 they have voided all my cancellation requests with out my knowledge.

Customer support are very unhelpful and insist that despite cancelling I am still liable for the fees, and fees inured from the external debt collection agency.

I have now moved my 10+ domains to a more reliable and customer friendly web host.

If you are considering using 1and1 please do your research first, you will see that this is not an isolated case.

Just Straight Up Poor!!

I would deter anyone from using this company. They offer very little for the price that they charge. When you have a problem you call India or Indonesia or the Philippines and they don't understand your questions. After using the service for years hoping to be provided better service and apps it remained the same. I am in the process of moving to another host.

worst customer service ever

Another 1and1 customer ripped off content from our news site and it took eight months for 1 And 1 to process the takedown request. This is a terrible company and should be avoided at all costs. I don't know how they stay in business.

once you're in it's impossible to get out

I started using 1&1 some years ago. I never had any trouble with them UNTIL I WANTED TO LEAVE. I found another hosting outfit that provided more services for one third of the price, so started to process of moving my three domains across. 6 weeks later, I've only been able to more one single domain. My two dot-com's are stuck - jammed solid in 1&1's maze of obscure, conflicting and impersonal processes.
They make it very easy to join or to add new domains, but they have no information at all on their sites about how to leave or transfer DNS.

Ransomed my deceased brother's domain name

My brother owned two domains and had hosting service with 1and1. He passed away in 2008 and at the time we didn't realize he actually owned the domains, only that he had been working on developing a website with someone else. Apparently his hosting service was paid through sometime in late 2009 since the site was no longer accessible then. Soon after we realized the domain was in his name and it was up for renewal in March 2010. I contacted 1and1 about transferring ownership of the domain name to his estate representative.

They initially told us told us the only way we could take ownership of the domain was to pay for the past due balance on the hosting account (nevermind that the site went down as soon as the hosting plan wasn't renew).

Then they told us they would make an exception, but we would have to open a web hosting account with them, so they had an "active" account to transfer it too.

I purchase it on my own after it expired. Wished I had notified ICANN!!

Worst customer service *ever*

Seriously – DO NOT HOST HERE.

Their hosting service is average, but their customer service is the worst I have ever seen. I canceled my account with them and yet, they still feel the need to charge me for services I neither want nor received.

They will automatically sign you up for a 1 year contract – they did this to me after I spoke with a CS agent while I was signing up and specifically said I wanted a month-to-month plan.

On top of it all, their customer service agents AND MANAGERS are rude beyond belief. They clearly do not care about keeping their customers.

Trust me – there are more important things in life, and there are better host providers out there. It’s just not worth it – move on and find another host. You’ll be better off.

it's cheap but it's slow. the connection is always slow. there were many times I couldn't get to my email. FTP is no longer included in the service (you need to buy a software to be able to edit your website). customer service is incompetent, they answer your phone but their English in poor and it's difficult to get straight answers. My "internet needs" were low so I stayed with them because the price is low. But I'm finally moving to a different host. I don't recemmend 1and1.

Misleading Advertising and Worst Possible Customer Service

I signed up for a 3 months "free trial" of MailXchange only to find out that 1&1 would also charge me a "Service Set-up Fee" of 4.99 which was not made clear during the ordering process.

When I rang up to query this charge I was told that my account would be cancelled and that I would not be charged. However, without giving me a chance to clarify this issue I had their agent put the phone down on me. This was after hours of trying to get through to them in the first place and then being asked to reveal my full password over the phone!! - A most questionable security hole in their processes.

Last but not least MailXchange turned out to be an incredibly poor and clunky wannabe MS Exchange service that is a pain to install.

All in all an utterly disgraceful experience! I urge you to stay well clear of 1&1.

Someone from Trading Standards should take a close look at 1&1's advertising and selling strategies!!

Bad admin/config and arrogant tech support

I have encountered a problem with hosting service 1and1, who despite having good prices has a tech support department that oscillates between clueless and arrogant.

In their architecture, your shared web server and your database servers are different boxes (which for performance profiling, config and security is OK). However their have no load matching between the two, and for unexplained reasons set their MySQL server time-outs low.

Net effect is that cron jobs that meet CPU competition (like if you launch yours job at midnight along with everybody else) you get server-side disconnections.

Having run tech support teams before, I know how to get my calls escalated past 1and1's clueless frontline staff. After a few escalation exchanges 1and1 not only refused to fix their systems (say by increasing the server-side time-outs or uncluttering client-side servers) they invited me to contact their legal department to argue my case.

Anyway, avoid 1and1 unless you want to write a lot of extra code to work around their system administration ineptitude and tech support atrocities. And, please, feel free to pass this email along to everyone you know who might be remotely interested.

Company is now a disaster

The company used to be good a few years ago but has declined in the last year.

They have increased prices and decreased services

Their billing department gets in the way of transactions with lots of red tape and misinformation. Other departments still try to help, but billing rules and is a deal breker.

Their control panel is very basic.

Overall, not a good value for your money.

I was slow to move on because I hosted with them for many years, but finally had move on.
