it's cheap but it's slow. the connection is always slow. there were many times I couldn't get to my email. FTP is no longer included in the service (you need to buy a software to be able to edit your website). customer service is incompetent, they answer your phone but their English in poor and it's difficult to get straight answers. My "internet needs" were low so I stayed with them because the price is low. But I'm finally moving to a different host. I don't recemmend 1and1.

Misleading Advertising and Worst Possible Customer Service

I signed up for a 3 months "free trial" of MailXchange only to find out that 1&1 would also charge me a "Service Set-up Fee" of 4.99 which was not made clear during the ordering process.
When I rang up to query this charge I was told that my account would be cancelled and that I would not be charged. However, without giving me a chance to clarify this issue I had their agent put the phone down on me. This was after hours of trying to get through to them in the first place and then being asked to reveal my full password over the phone!! - A most questionable security hole in their processes.
Last but not least MailXchange turned out to be an incredibly poor and clunky wannabe MS Exchange service that is a pain to install.
All in all an utterly disgraceful experience! I urge you to stay well clear of 1&1.
Someone from Trading Standards should take a close look at 1&1's advertising and selling strategies!!

Bad admin/config and arrogant tech support

I have encountered a problem with hosting service 1and1, who despite having good prices has a tech support department that oscillates between clueless and arrogant.
In their architecture, your shared web server and your database servers are different boxes (which for performance profiling, config and security is OK). However their have no load matching between the two, and for unexplained reasons set their MySQL server time-outs low.
Net effect is that cron jobs that meet CPU competition (like if you launch yours job at midnight along with everybody else) you get server-side disconnections.
Having run tech support teams before, I know how to get my calls escalated past 1and1's clueless frontline staff. After a few escalation exchanges 1and1 not only refused to fix their systems (say by increasing the server-side time-outs or uncluttering client-side servers) they invited me to contact their legal department to argue my case.
Anyway, avoid 1and1 unless you want to write a lot of extra code to work around their system administration ineptitude and tech support atrocities. And, please, feel free to pass this email along to everyone you know who might be remotely interested.

Company is now a disaster

The company used to be good a few years ago but has declined in the last year.
They have increased prices and decreased services
Their billing department gets in the way of transactions with lots of red tape and misinformation. Other departments still try to help, but billing rules and is a deal breker.
Their control panel is very basic.
Overall, not a good value for your money.
I was slow to move on because I hosted with them for many years, but finally had move on.

I never had any problems with 1and1 hosting. Their prices are really good and they include many features with their packages. I'm not sure what people mean when they say they got ripped off because $3.99/month for hosting just cant be beat. I actually have a plan a step up from that and I pay $6.99 per month and I get 150GB of space. They do charge every 6 months though, but I guess they will prorate and issue a refund for the unused months if one wants to cancel service. Also every time they bill my card, they send me an email with a pdf invoice attached which is kind of nice.

Terriable. No sytem admin on duty during weekend

One of my client's vps down on Friday 7pm. Submitted ticket by phone and email at 7:30pm for server restart. Nobody touched it till 11pm. Call them again at 11:30pm, they said my ticket is still on the line. 18hrs later, called them, they said no sys admin works during weekend. 24x7 is only for customer service. Today is Sunday and my server is still down. Nobody can tell when can they reboot my VPS. Terriable!! I'm planning to move all of my servers from them in short future.

I have never had a worse experience with a company prior to 1and1. They suck you into their contract, and even after cancellation continue to bill you. I canceled my account, and over three months later I received a debtor letter in the mail stating I owed them a large sum of money. Do not bother using 1and1, they will screw you over in the end.

HORRIBLE, DEPLORABLE, REALLY SHITTY Customer Service

All of my sites got locked due to some issued with cards expiring and what not. I called to get assistance and wanted to know when my site was really locked because I wanted to know which business emails did not go out in time and which business emails I did not receive; however, since it was a Saturday, they were unable to answer my question.
The tech guy first said he could not provide any information regarding the freeze because I would have to talk to the billing department once Monday rolled around. I could not wait that long to get answers so after 3 minutes of constantly talking, the tech came back and told me that my account was frozen on Nov 5. I told him that that date was wrong because I've been able to access my sites and can prove it via google analytics. However, he just kept repeating the answer and could not provide me with any more information. I asked to talk to an admin or his supervisor. No dice.
At the earliest chance, I'll be switching to another company because they have HORRIBLE DEPLORABLE customer service.

My experience with 1 & 1 Internet has been terrible at best. I purchased a domain name for $4.99 under a promotion, they charged me $4.99 for the domain, and then attempted to take another $8.99 (the regular price) from my card, which was declined. Today, I received a debt collection notice, 2 actually, one for $8.99 (Which I was never meant to owe) and $14.95 (Although online it says $18.95 for late fees, where I was never late) They also want me to provide my own stamp to respond to their notices. Keep away from them, you will have a hard time canceling, getting any promotional offers you applied for, and more.

The package deal was misleading and I got overcharged. I ve tried to cancel. I'm still in the process of trying to cancel. I'm hoping to avoid collections which so many others have reported was their experience!
