I have been with DreamHost for seven years. I have finally had enough with their customer service. I have had an email problem that has caused me a lot of down time. I was trying to solve my issue via the internet service ticket. After 6 emails there was no solution to my problem and I was asked the same question by two technicians. It would have been nice for them to pickup the phone to answer my questions.

We are running our Open Source, WebAPP CMS Project ( http://www.web-app.net )on DreamHost, and so are many of our users.
For what one gets for the money we have no doubt that DreamHost is number 1. You can run hundreds of sites on the server for few usd a month, not to mention the harddisk size in gigas and not in MB as in other companies..
To those of you who require more stable services, we would suggest to use DreamHost private server hosting, in which you can ajust the costs according to your or your customer budget and needs.
Promocode, we have literally been covering all hosting expenses with the DreamHost promocode ( see more on our site under "hosting").
Live support: what is all this nonsense above about DH not answering calls? Why don't you simply go here: http://irc.gnu.org/dreamhost and talk to them, there is ALWAYS someone there providing live help.
We strongly recommend DreamHost for companies, organizations and scripting projects.

These people should be called NIGHTMARE host. They have nobody you can call when there is a problem and I find it to be a HUGE problem when they start charging me for things they shouldn't charge me for. They made several erroneous charges and they fixed two of them, but they are refusing to fix a $190 problem and have my (2) domains held hostage unless I pay them $260! What!!!??? And again... nobody to talk to.
It's a good thing these are the ones I'm building, not the ones I rely heavily on every day. I was dangerously close to that I couldn't imagine if that were the case. They are not worth the risk. There are several others that have phone number and professional customer services that will help you. These guys only have email and though they reply, they don't actually answer any of your questions and concerns. It's totally frustrating.
My review ABSOLUTELY NEGATIVE!!! STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Control panel: this is not Cpanel - it's home-grown, and it's _better_.
* File organization is excellent:
/home/user/my.domain.com
/home/user/my.domain2.com
/home/user/logs/
/home/user/Maildir/
/home/user/whatever/
/home/user/rubyproject/.../preferred_public/
* Shell/ftp users: you decide, grouping specific domains to specific shell/ftp users
* Mail users: unlimited on separate server if you have lots of mail users, but you can give preferred shell users mail privileges!
* Jabber hosting, media streaming, etc.
* Assign your preferred subdomain to any mysql db - for instance - mysql.domain.com.
* Compile your own cgi php, rails, etc. if theirs doesn't suit your needs, but they offer so much, it's hard to think they couldn't.
While I've never spoken with anyone at Dreamhost, they have been courteous on the support interface.
If you know what you're doing on linux, you can do almost anything on dreamhost except run a persistent service on a shared ip - for instance, you cannot run your own voip server - very sensible limits. (You can get a private server for that.)
They have an official forum and wiki, and a customer voting schema for feature implementation. Forum members are well-informed and courteous, even with noobs like me. Wiki is amazingly complete.
They could have more solid uptime. At 99.35%, (average since 2005) it's perfect for experimental, small non-profits, small commercial ventures or personal websites where uptime is not mission-critical.
Other customers may squawk about uptime, but really - every host has some downtime. If you can't take off your spock ears and play hackeysack for an hour until they get it together, what's your deal? Manage.
I wish they had postgresql.

I currently use DreamHost to host two sites with one of them being registered there as well. The larger of the two sites has been there since 1999, serves approx. 4,000 pages per day (not counting the faviocon, robots, and the like) and has an announcement list of approx. 1,000 users who subscribed using a (DreamHost provided) automated system. I have also used DreamHost in the past to host a site for a blogger-run-blog when I had the time to post.
The web hosting aspect is easy to use with standard ftp or secure-ftp access. The management of the various other things (changing billing options, checking user statistics, web-mail, forwarding/redirecting e-mail, and setting up e-mail subscription lists) is very user friendly. The team running it always has a sense of humor in their blog and newsletter -- but doesn't let that get in the way of getting the job done.
I have contacted them over a dozen times in the past with questions on topics such as transferring domains and the use of mailing lists and have gotten helpful responses within 24 hours to each one, often much quicker. (They also have a support wiki that answers a lot of standard questions).
I had a recent (my fault, I left a door open type) of security breach and they responded to my e-mail that day and followed up again the next.
The most negative publicity they have received is that recently they had a billing error where customers who were using automatic billing on their credit or debit cards were billed in advance. They caught the error, put a notice up about it on the status page, set about reversing the charges (e-mailing each person when their charges were reversed), and explained the entire situation on their blog.

They were good for a while and luckily for us they began tanking some of their email features right as our 2 year deal was ending. I will be moving elsewhere.
cons: e-mail downtime and no free anonymous ftp support. (they just recently added PAID anon. FTP)

A friend and colleague of mine convinced our small firm to begin using Dreamhost for our website hosting. Before that, we'd been using a local contractor who handles our network administration, so we had a little trepidation about using a company all the way in Los Angeles. But so far, we've been really very happy. We don't mind only using email for most of our support questions, the inside control panel is very user-friendly for newbies, but there's a lot of wiggle room to improve a site and do more powerful things, once you begin learning more about back-end programming. We've had very little down-time so far, and think the blog and monthly newsletter are actually funny, as well as informative.
We were also very happy with the discounted rate we were able to get (my colleague gave us the affliate code "HOUSTONSPACE" - apparently users can refer people and give them around $100 off their service fees, in return for free hosting), so our first year of hosting was incredibly cheap. I think depending on the service, if you use one of those codes, you can get it down to around 20 bucks for the first year.
