to this review here I'm a web designer and have been using Hostway for myself and some of my clients for 5+ years. Starting in about Jan 2006 Hostway service has gotten SO BAD it has driven me to start moving my clients and myself to another provider.
*Service outages at least once a month
*20+ minute hold times for support are typical
*under-trained or just plain dumb support staff
*frequently phone support lines get overloaded to the piont that no calls can even go through
*more often than not support Q's sent via email go unanswered
To sum it up: Stay AWAY from Hostway. Hostway sucks! Hostway is incompitent. Hostway not worth the trouble!

I couldn't agree more. I've been with them for 5 years, and I'm jumping ship. Servers are too unreliable for any site that depends on the internet for business.

MOVE SOMEONE ELSE. You may have porn going on that site and that could be why your server is filling up. Find out who is causing this issue and ban them all together.

As of Thursday my site Ztrend.com has been down due to Hostway not properly maintaining their servers. I was told by your technical dept. on Thursday 7/24 that it was my site that had the issue and not your server. I found this difficult to believe since we have not altered the code on my site in any way for the past 30 days and it had been working fun up until then. On Friday morning 7/25 I was informed by my technical advisor/programmer that it was due to Hostway's disk space was full, there was not enough disk space on the website server to allow the database to write back to it. I then alerted Hostway. Hostway had no clue until they were informed by me and were quite dismissive about it.
This issue has only been fixed as of now. I just received an email from my advisor/programmer that he is watching the disk space be filled up again and it will only be a matter of time that my site will again stop working due to Hostway's improper maintained.
I just phoned Hostway's technical dept. only to receive a snotty reply asking me how I could know such a thing (the disk space was filling up again). I explained that it was my programmer who has been monitoring it on his side and I can assure you his is quite good at what he does.
I highly doubt that this alert (see below) has been passed on by the technical person I just spoke to as he appeared to be quite arrogant. He said that they monitor the disks. I then asked if they monitored the disks why was I told on Thursday that it was my issue and not Hostway's issue? And why was it that Hostway allowed their disc to get full? And why are they now allowing it to happen all over again?
This is my business. I have spent thousands of dollars on Ztrends website and market to New York City hotels and businesses daily. I take my business seriously and Hostway has robbed me of several accounts. Hostway made me look like a fool. I would not complain in such depth but this isn't the first time Hostway has hijacked my business for such a period of time. This is the third time - once for a week and the other for 9 days. If you would like me to elaborate on the prior two issues that affected my business in the past couple months I will gladly do so.
I am asking that I be compensated for Hostway's inability to provide proper hosting. I am requesting that my account be credited for 6 months of hosting fees. I would also suggest that you speak to your technical support dept and explain that their attitudes towards their customers does not help any issues. They should be thankful that a customer is alerting them to server issues.

You are not kidding. Here is what they have done to my business in the past two months. After reading the below - it just went down again as predicted. We moved to Slice Host. The only thing you need to do is be sure to have a good programmer to set you up and license any programs running on your server. I have had no issues since the move has been made. Hostway does not provide hosting for businesses.

I have the optimum online business package wich uses hostways for email and web hosting. my email goes down every two to three week's and it takes about five days to get it going again. I install email servers for clients and if I left them with no email for five days they would flip out and I would be out of business!!!!!!!!!!. optimum gives me credit for all the email down time and when they get tired of crediting my account maybe they will dump them.

I have been with Hostway since 2001. I switched to the Advance Plan and they took my entires site down and I have had no email for my business for 9 days. This hurts. Anyone hear about service from 1&1 Internet or GoDaddy?

After we have removed our website from them to another company, they surprised us with an email on Thursday APRIL 9th that our domain will expire Friday APRIL 10th. So, I called them on Friday AFTER HOURS (24/7) and tried to transfer the domain name somewhere else. To my surprise that the domain went on HOLD and they person in charge can not do anything about it. I HAVE TO CALL BACK ON MONDAY TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. OMG! I just took over a client who is on Hostway. What a horrible joke their technical support is. Very unresponsive and they have no idea what they're doing. This new client of mine has 8 sites with them and has discussed their displeasure with them. Ugh. Hostway bought our hosting company, "upgraded" our site and brought down the entire shopping piece - it's been down a week now. Since the whole POINT of the site is selling things, this is destroying our business. Tech support has *no* clue what they're doing, and *no* interest in fixing the problem. DO NOT USE HOSTWAY.

We've had several Hostway customers move to our services over the last 2 years. It seems their support is terrible and the service is slightly worse. Don't make the same mistake others have made! Choose a quality web host!

If you have servic3e with Hostway. Take your business somewhere else. They are getting rid of their American Customer service reps to replace them with barely English speaking reps. The service was horrible then and getting worse now. Im not an upset employee, just someone who seen how they operate. If they don't care about their employees, they definitely don't care for you.

My Blackberry e-mail for my domain has been out for several days now (Sep 27) since the migration of the ValueWeb platform and billing server to the Hostway one on Sep 23 2009. There has been no response at all - not even an acknowledgement. I am out of patience with them. I am not able to log into my ValueWeb to move files out for transfer to another hosting company since the site no exists. I have no such account when tried to log into Hostway. I hope Hostway is not trying one of their schemes to penalize transfers that I saw in other review sites.

i have been with hostway since 2000 and now run a few sites with them. i have until now been satisfied with them and even referred them to others as a good hosting solution. recently i noticed a problem with my blog (wordpress) and started a trouble ticket. no response. so i tried again. still no response. third time lucky - nope still waiting - even tried emailing their support email - still nothing - its like sending requests into outer space hoping an alien will reply - futile...sure hope they notice clients leaving and improve things and quickly too - otherwise they will lose my business and many others - hope this wont be the case.

I agree. Hostway's customer support is comparatively really bad. i have lost clients because of their lousy support. Being an international client, it costs me a fortune to call their support, I hardly get through, and when I do I have to hold on for ages only to have to deal with a dunbass. I for one have moved all my sites to hosting.com. Their service is far superior.

I am really disappointed by Hostway. While they claim a lot about their support and service on their website, its really a dud. During their recent upgrade they messed up nameserver configuration of one of my domains, resulting in the closure of that website since last 3 days. I have tried to contact them through email and online support forms but no response as yet.Down with Hostway!

I was with them for years - now it has gone to shit. Their service is the worst and the staff is completely incompetent. They are from Bulgary. You have to ask for Vancouver support if you want anyone with a brain. But even with those support staff, the problems still occur and they can't solve anything.

Their service is horrendous and is worthy of a class action law suit in the immediate future. I agree with Krish, their support has dropped to nothing, with dumb people.I was with them for years - now it has gone to shit. Their service is the worst and the staff is completely incompetent. I have to agree. I've been with Hostway for years and years but in the past 3 years or so things have gotten really bad. Support is quick to point out that any problems I have they can't replicate and must be due to me, not them.Email is terrible, it stops or locks up constantly. I've had to contact them over email problems many times, I can't understand why they would have so much trouble maintaining simple email services? Every other hosting company can.

It looks like there are a lot more "managed" hosting providers available now than years ago when I first started looking for a dedicated server. Rackspace is still my favorite dedicated server provider, you pay more for great service and support, and its worth it.

Hostway is just terrible, I couldn't agree with the comments more. I am in the process of moving 3 websites off of hostway to an amazon EC2 Instance. It looks like there are a lot more "managed" hosting providers available now than years ago when I first started looking for a dedicated server. Rackspace is still my favorite dedicated server provider, you pay more for great service and support, and its worth it.

I am familiar with hostway's migrations and i went trough them. Everything which you are stating can be resolved fast if you PAY attention to your business more closely... I called and asked how this migration can process without issues. They have explained if i close the current account and re-open it on the new system there will not be any issues. Guess what it wasn't even 24 h and i had no issues with them. And if you are loosing 1000$ per day since your so precious shopping cart is down. GET a DEDICATED server for 1000$ and pay a special person to maintain it for 7000$ per month you will still get 20000 per month but NOOO you have to blame for your own incompetence on the provider.

I'm a web developer and have also been using Hostway for my clients for over 6 years. It really went down hill for me in Feb 2010 when they decided to migrate everyone's servers. I was using an SSL site with a fixed IP and they moved it onto a general server without SSL. Calling Hostway service was completely futile. If/when they fixed it, they even wanted to charge me for re-installing the certificate when they were the ones that had broken my working site. Regardless, the site remained down indefinitely as I could not get anyone there to fix it. Speaking with several out of the country people and getting no where fast, drove me to move my hosting to another professional provider. Minimum 20+ minute hold times, emails go comletely unanswered. STAY AWAY FROM HOSTWAY IF YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR WEB SITES UP AND WORKING.

Like Jeff, I've been with Hostway for over 10 years. Recently they migrated my site to a new server. When they did, they corrupted my site files. My site no longer forwarded me a form requesting information which is the sole purpose of my site in the first place. I called their "customer service" and was told that it wasn't their problem. They suggested that I contact my Web designer to fix it. Keep in mind I have a very basic site, and it has not been changed much in the past 10 years. The guy who designed it didn't have any files on his computer any longer. I was faced with having to redo the whole site.I decided to shop around and found another host at more than half the price, with Americans that answer the phone promptly, give great support, and no bullshit.
When I called Hostway to cancel, they didn't even bother to ask why. When I asked about a refund for the remainder of my subscription, they said that since I paid for a year in advance there would be no refund. HOSTWAY, YOU SUCK!
