Great at start but it cannot keep up with latest technology

I have been with 1and1 for 4 yrs. Mine has Windows Hosting's business package which costs $9.99/month. It gives 3 domain names and unlimited subdomains. It has a lot of features such as web builder, email marketing tool, etc... The price is about right. However, it currently supports .NET 2.0 while other already support NET 3.5 and Silverlight. I am currently writting applications using Visual Studio 2008. With .NET 2.0 support only, I cannot utilize all new features in my code. Therefore, I think of moving to a different web hoster.

You'ld be silly to think that any web bosting company would be perfect for everybody...
1&1 has given me a lot of features and free stuff over the last couple years. I think their cheap prices are a bit crazy, but het I guess it means their competitors have to try and offer more for less. Big players like 1&1 in the indusry help everyone get better deals, no matter who they choose as a webhost.
If you are the kind of person to use fake signup information or who does not keep their credit card up to date, or who expects a dedicated support person for your $4.99 or $19.99 mo. - you might have expectations or personal behaviors that would cause you to have problems with any host.
No boubt there are webmasters who probably know more than most 1st level support guys at the hosting companies.
If you want full access and customization from a deep discounter like 1&1 - it begs the question, "WHY?" Are you someone who runs full blown ecommerce in ashared hosting environment just to save a little money? Godd luck to you if you are.
I remain for the past years, a satisfied 1and1 client. They work out just fine for all my needs. You should judge for yourself since most of the millions of happy 1and1 clients probably don't have time to counter the rants of negative comments like show up on this site.

Customer Service HORRIBLE

Our gaming clan hosts forums with 1and1 and we've had relatively few issues over the past two years - it's sufficient for what we need (not much) and the price is basically okay for what you get. We don't need much in the back end and outages have been rare. We had one incident with the Iranian hackers but it was resolved quickly (by myself) with no loss of anything important.
The problem at this point is that the original owner of the account has decided he does not want to continue - not an issue, we started following the procedures to switch ownership to myself. We both filled out the form and faxed it in (we live on opposite coasts and juggled the paperwork back and forth) and I've been waiting ever since...
It has been a two-week nightmare (the site is now down) in which I receive nothing but cut-and-paste responses to very simple English questions. They aren't even reading what I'm writing to them - the support personnel still refer to me by the original owners name and when I try to explain what is going on I get more cut-and-paste responses. I work in a medium-sized remote-hosting datacenter and my company would be out of business in a flash if our customer service was this horrible. I'm rapidly losing patience and as soon as I regain access to MY data and website I will be looking to transfer that account to a more customer-oriented host. I don't expect much from a cheap host, but I also don't expect the robot treatment. I have dealt with many webhosts and GSPs and have never had such a bad customer experience. Be warned - when it works it's fine for what it is, but any issues you encounter will probably result in very poor service response from 1and1 Internet.

Hi
I am using their service but looking to move to move to another host. that is why I google and found this website.
1and1 has a poor security. I lost all the content of my website 2 days ago. An iranian hacker was able to crack the security and inject some malicious files into the server; changed the index page and destroyed my database.
It was a desaster, that i blame to some extend 1and1.

I'm used to be a loyal customer to 1and1 internet. But since their server crash and my long, extended experience with their technical support team based in the Philippines, I completely changed my mind about the quality of the service a started to migrate some 18 websites away from these guys.
Not only our major packages hosted on their servers went down for a week full, but on top, they have lost ALL the content of our web shell (files, databases, settings, etc.).
Support is ONLY made of "cut and paste" answer by incompetent personnel who barely speaks English.
The new CEO, Oliver Mauss, claimed in every interview I caught on the Internet that his 1and1 Internet corporate vision is based on strong customer service and support. The reality is completely the opposite: false advertising and poor, unreliable service.
The infrastructure is good, their web interface for general management do offer great flexibility and is quiet easy to use.
But if your website is playing a key role in your daily business activities, please note that you're business is at risk, great risk and the day you'll drown because of them, it's certainly not their tech. support who will pull you out of trouble.

A lot of people have had problems with them, but I'm doing just fine. I joined up when they had their 1-year free special and have since upgraded the package twice, once at the 2-year mark and again at the 3-year mark.
I haven't had any problems to date (other than a short email glitch, but it was fixed quickly). I have a very low-volume site, but I use it for PHP/MySQL development. And that's one thing that I don't like about them: they were slow to go to PHP5 and slow to move to MySQL 5.
I'm currently looking for configuration information on how to setup webdav with subversion, and of course they don't include that info on their "admin" pages or in their FAQs. However, I seem to have r/w access to the httpd.conf that it's in my directory, so I may just try adding the LoadModule and AddModule statements myself and see if it works. Not sure what the refresh time would be on that file, though...

I was sucked in by the low pricing. I soon realized that's all that 1and1 offers. 1and1 provided the worst technical support and customer service I've ever experienced with a host. They continued to bill my credit card after cancelling services from them, which also wasted a ton of time with multiple emails, phone calls only to be redirected to figure things out on my own on their site. Save your time, don't waste a penny on this host.... take the time you'll waste with 1and1 to research and find a reliable web host that actually answers the phone and provides actual technical support.

you call and email your questions are not answered, support people talk to you , but they just go through the motions, they sound very underpaid. very often i am not able to connect to my email because of "internal server problem". your option then is to "go back".
i am finally looking for another provider

1and1.com web hosting company is one of the worst web hosting company's I've ever had to deal with. I was with them for a bit over a year, and during that time I experienced numerous "server" down problems, Internet Connection issues, Design issues caused by their software, and many many more issues. Their Customer Service is one of the WORST in the Industry. hardly anyone speaks english very well at all, so they are extremely hard to understand, and when you do reach someone, all they tell you is to look at the faq's. Getting any level of support from 1and1 is beyond hopeless. I would NOT, I repeat NOT ever recommend this company to even my enemies, let alone my friends.

I have their business package and their hosting is absolutely HORRIBLE. It goes down every other week and their tech support will take about a full day to fix their issues. Customer service folks have no idea what they are talking about and just BS you to the T. I dont recommend this company to ANYONE. I will definitely be leaving this month.
